TraceVoy

Licenses

Updated 9 October 2026

TraceVoy is built on open data and open fonts. These are the notices for what the app uses, what goes into its films and posters, and what this site shows.

Map data: OpenStreetMap

Map data © OpenStreetMap contributorsAvailable under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0. See openstreetmap.org/copyright.

Roads, paths, railways, buildings, water, place labels and points of interest in TraceVoy's maps come from OpenStreetMap. TraceVoy draws them with its own map renderer and style. Every film and poster carries the credit © OpenStreetMap contributors, and it cannot be switched off.

Vector tiles: OpenFreeMap and OpenMapTiles

OpenFreeMap © OpenMapTiles Data from OpenStreetMap

The OpenStreetMap data reaches the app as vector tiles from OpenFreeMap (openfreemap.org), built to the OpenMapTiles schema (openmaptiles.org).

Terrain: Mapterhorn

Terrain © MapterhornSources and their licences: mapterhorn.com/attribution

Elevation for 3D terrain and hill shading comes from Mapterhorn (mapterhorn.com), which combines open elevation data from many producers. The worldwide base is Copernicus GLO-30:

Produced using Copernicus WorldDEM-30 © DLR e.V. 2010-2014 and © Airbus Defence and Space GmbH 2014-2018 provided under COPERNICUS by the European Union and ESA; all rights reserved.The organisations in charge of the Copernicus programme by law or by delegation do not incur any liability for any use of the Copernicus WorldDEM-30.

Where Mapterhorn's terrain for Japan comes from the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan (GSI), used under the GSI content terms:

「基盤地図情報(数値標高モデル)」(国土地理院)をもとに作成Created from the Fundamental Geospatial Data (Digital Elevation Model) of the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan.

Other regions draw on further national and regional open data, under licences such as CC BY, public domain, Licence Ouverte, Datenlizenz Deutschland and Open Government Licences. Each producer is credited at mapterhorn.com/attribution.

Place names: GeoNames

Place names: GeoNames (geonames.org), CC BY 4.0Filtered and converted for offline use in the app. The data is provided “as is”, without warranty.

TraceVoy names towns, cities and regions on the iPhone from a gazetteer built from GeoNames data, so no location leaves the device. Some stop names come from points of interest in the OpenStreetMap tiles.

How routes are made

Routes in TraceVoy's films are computed on the iPhone from OpenStreetMap data. The road and rail network built for this is a derivative of the OpenStreetMap database, and the routes drawn from it are produced works. As section 4.6 of the ODbL asks, this is the method used to make it.

  1. Source. OpenStreetMap ways in OpenFreeMap vector tiles (OpenMapTiles schema, transportation layer), read by class: motorway, trunk, primary, secondary, tertiary, minor, service, track, path, busway, ferry, rail and transit.
  2. Tile edges. Each tile's lines are clipped at the tile edge, so neighbouring tiles join without overlap.
  3. Points. Nearby points are merged, so lines that meet in the data meet in the network.
  4. Junctions. T-junctions (a line ending on another) and level crossings (two lines crossing on the same level) are rebuilt as junctions. Bridges and tunnels are kept apart from what they pass over or under.
  5. Connected parts. The network is split into connected parts, so a stop is only joined to roads that lead somewhere.
  6. Search. A* search finds the quickest path for each profile, with a set speed per class:
    • car: roads from motorway to track, and ferries; skips ways marked access=no and parking aisles;
    • foot: roads and paths except motorways and busways, and ferries;
    • bike: roads, paths and tracks except motorways, and ferries;
    • rail: rail and transit lines, leaving out preserved, miniature and funicular lines, with 350 m walking transfer links between stations;
    • ferry: ferry lines.
  7. One-way streets. Respected from zoom 12, where the tiles carry them. If they block every path, the search runs again without them.
  8. Zoom. Short legs use zoom 14 tiles. Long legs use a corridor of lower-zoom tiles, refined at zoom 14 near both ends.
  9. Checks. The path is simplified. A route far longer than the straight line is dropped and drawn dashed, as an estimate. Flights are drawn as arcs and not routed.

The network is built on the iPhone for each trip and is not published or shared. The tiles it comes from are public at openfreemap.org. Questions about the method are welcome through Support.
